软木就是栓皮栎的树皮，剥下来树不会死，之后会再长出新的一层。2001 年的保护法令对剥皮管得很细：树干离地 1.3 米处的周长不到 70 厘米，不许第一次剥，一般要长到 25 岁左右；之后每两次剥皮原则上至少间隔 9 年。
每次剥完，要用不褪色的漆在剥过的树干上写下当年年份的最后一位数字。图里这棵树上的 7，就是它上一次剥皮那年的个位数。
